20th Century British Coins, 1901 - 1971

Up to 1919, silver coins were made of sterling silver (92.5% silver).
From 1920 the silver content was reduced to 50% until 1946, after which 'silver' coins were made of a copper/nickel alloy (cupro-nickel).

We only sell coins produced before the decimalisation of the coinage in 1971.

Crowns

A silver crown had the value of five shillings (5/-), measured approx 1 inches in diameter and weighed approx 1 oz.
Twentieth century crowns are relatively rare.  Edward VII only issued crowns in 1902 and George V only issued crowns between 1927 and 1936.
Of these, only the 1935 Silver Jubilee issue is readily available.  George VI only issued commemorative crowns - one to celebrate his Coronation in 1937
and the second for the Festival of Britain in 1951.  Elizabeth II only issued pre-decimal crowns in 1953 (Coronation), in 1960 and in 1965 (Churchill).
