The Chalfont St Peter Hoard, October 1989

The appearance of a large number of late 3rd century coins in ploughed soil in a Buckinghamshire field led to the finding of three pots and the eventual discovery of a fourth following a limited excavation of the area.   Eventually some 6628 third century coins were recovered, mainly base silver antoniniani.   Several more coins were found and reported in 1995. There are no known Roman settlements in the area of the find so it is likely that the hoard had been deliberately hidden.  The hoard was examined by the British Museum who retained some coins as did the Buckingham County Museum.  The rest were returned to the finder.
